In today’s digital age, seamless and robust internet connectivity is crucial. Wi-Fi meshing technology has emerged as a game-changer, enhancing network coverage and performance by enabling seamless roaming and easy expansion through optimized configurations and advanced technologies like Wi-Fi 6 and 7. Here’s a detailed look at how Wi-Fi meshing works and its benefits.
1. Extending Network Coverage Wirelessly
Wi-Fi meshing extends network coverage wirelessly, offering flexibility for hard-to-reach areas. Unlike traditional Wi-Fi roaming, which connects multiple access points for seamless transitions, meshing extends networks wirelessly. This flexibility is ideal for temporary locations or areas where physical wiring is challenging. While wired connections between access points are preferred for stability, Wi-Fi meshing is a valuable alternative when wiring isn’t feasible.

By configuring a new SSID, enabling security features like WPA2/WPA3, and optimizing settings for seamless roaming, you can ensure stable connections across multiple access points. Setting the signal strength to negative 71 dBm, for example, allows devices to roam seamlessly, ensuring stable connections for applications like video calls.

The system evaluates multiple wireless paths to maintain an internet connection, choosing the most effective route based on transmit rates.
5. Frequency Management for Optimal Performance
Wi-Fi mesh networks perform better with 5 GHz for backhaul and 2.4 GHz for client connections. Each additional hop can degrade signal quality significantly, so using higher frequency bands like 5 GHz and future 6 GHz is crucial for maintaining speed. Properly configuring spanning tree priority is also essential to prevent loops when integrating Ethernet devices with a wireless mesh network.
6. Leveraging Advanced Technologies
Wi-Fi mesh networks perform best with minimal hops, ideally using Wi-Fi 6 devices and higher frequency bands. Future improvements are expected with Wi-Fi 7, which will support higher capacities and simultaneous communication. 7. VLAN Trunking and Multiple SSIDs
VLANs can be trunked over a Wi-Fi mesh for seamless handoff, supporting multiple SSIDs. Testing is essential for switch compatibility and optimal performance. Creating Wi-Fi mesh networks using Wi-Fi 5 and Wi-Fi 6 devices is possible, but meshing like devices is recommended to avoid performance degradation.
